Day 1 - 8/2/08

We decided to start out this day by getting up at 2AM to leave for Utah. Our rational behind this was that Emily should hopefully sleep most of the way there. Man were we ever wrong! I should start by saying that we decided to take the small car on this trip in an effort to save gas and money.

At first everything was going according to plan, we woke at 2AM and were out the door and on the road by 2:30. However shortly after leaving home we began hearing a wierd "rubbing" sound in the back end of our car. We soon came to discover that the tire was rubbing in the wheel well every tme we hit a bump or made a deep turn. I guess it had been a long time since we had that car heavily loaded, so we hadn't known that the springs in the back end obviously needed replacing. Anyway we stopped a couple of times along the way and tried to redistribute the load to stop the rubbing problem to no avail. Eventually we turned around and drove home to switch cars. I should probably aslo mention that we had just had all four tires and the brakes replaced (about $800) on the small car in preparation for this trip! Oh well, I guess it needed to be done anyway.

We got home...unloaded...reloaded...left the house again at 4:45 AM. All three of us tired and a little grouchy. All in all the drive took 13 hours and our plan for Emily to sleep failed miserably. She probably slept a total of 90 minutes the entire trip!

Thank heavens this day was not a reflection of how the entire trip would go!

Bummer! At least you didn't get stuck anywhere.

It was probably a much more comfortable ride in the big car!?? Man, that really stinks. Especially the loss of 2+ hours of driving. Can't wait to hear how the rest of the trip went!

Oh man, that's not a fun start. I can't believe Emily only slept 90 minutes. They always seem to do that, you try and outmaneuver them and they outsmart you anyway.

She is getting so big and so cute! You should have called us!

I hope the rest went better.
